Job Summary Columbia Orthopedics is seeking a dedicated Nurse Practitioner to join our Hip & Knee team at the Main (168th St) and Midtown offices (51st) in NYC. This is an outpatient role focused on providing high-quality care to patients before and after surgery. Responsibilities Treats patients with orthopedic issues and manages inpatient and outpatient services and/or other situations.
Work independently or collaboratively with the orthopedic surgery attending and resident staff as well as the nurses, therapists, social workers and other support personnel who take part in caring for orthopedic surgery patients. Will work collaboratively within a team "pod" setting.
Evaluating, diagnosing and managing non-operative and surgical patients in a high-paced environment.
Chart preparation according to protocol and orders; appropriate x-rays for office hours using Epic.
Manages patient care in Epic, including documentation, messaging, and prescriptions.
Seeing post-operative patients for wound checks, follow-up care, and ongoing recovery needs.
Coordinates pre-operative optimization and post-operative care plans.
Orders and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests relative to patient's age-specific needs. Prescribes treatments, injections and monitors outcomes.
Administers injections and prescribes appropriate pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment modalities.
Remove/apply dressings, sutures, staples, slings and/or braces.
Reviews pre-operative instructions and explains the surgical process to patients who are about to have surgery.
Performs patient education duties; distributes information and directs patients to relevant resources.
Prescribe post-op pain medications as directed.
See post-op patients for wound checks and post-op care and notify attending of findings if abnormal.
Reviews post-operative discharge instructions with patients including wound care and pain management.
Triage incoming telephone calls; instructs patient and family regarding treatment instructions, then documents action taken in the Electronic Medical Record.
Sends patient prescription requests to pharmacy and documents action in the Electronic Medical Record.
Assist with patient correspondence as needed (forms, letters of medical necessity, school notes, insurance inquiries, etc.).
Assist patients in meeting health needs by identifying potential or existing problems, exploring available alternatives and providing support to the patient and family members to make informed decisions regarding health care.
Facilitates the patient's transition within and between healthcare settings (admitting, transferring, discharging and home care including visiting nurse referrals).
Formulate patient care protocols and critical pathways.
Assist with development; participate in design and implementation of clinical research trials.
Sees patients independently, performs in-depth workups, and refers patients to surgeons.
Serve as a mentor to new-to-practice NPs and student NPs via the Columbia University School of Nursing program.
Other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and five years of experience
Preferred Qualifications Prior experience in management of orthopedic patients
Clinical Doctorate preferred
Bilingual (Spanish/English)
Other Qualifications New York RN and FNP licensure
New Jersey RN and FNP licensure
National certification
