Overview
This classification is responsible for professional case management work of considerable difficulty and lead work of routine difficulty; and performs related work as required. This is the lead level class in the DCS Case Manager job series. An employee in this class is responsible for leading and training subordinates in the performance of case management work for children under the State’s supervision, in State custody, or at risk of State custody, and their families.
Qualifications
Education: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree.
Experience: Equivalent to two years of full‑time professional work providing child welfare services, including social, psychological, or correctional counseling or case management; volunteer services coordination for a children’s service program; and/or juvenile classification coordination.
Age: Must be at least 21 years old at the date of application.
Citizenship: Must be a citizen of the United States.
Driver’s License: Must possess a valid driver’s license prior to and during employment.
Character: Must have good moral character, as determined by investigation, and have no conviction for a felony.
Background: Must complete a criminal history disclosure form, agree to release all records involving criminal history, supply a fingerprint sample for a criminal history records check, and pass a pre‑employment screening test for illegal drugs.
Responsibilities
Serve as a mentor for less-experienced case management staff by providing guidance for difficult/multi‑focal cases and participating in multidisciplinary teams.
Determine abuse or neglect, assess risk, develop safety plans, make permanency recommendations, monitor adoptive and foster families, recruit foster parents, conduct home visits, and coordinate/observe visitation.
Maintain documentation for case files and other required records; prepare for, participate in, and testify at court proceedings.
Conduct interviews with alleged child victims, reporters, families, and collateral contacts; gather necessary information such as school records, medical exams, psychological information, and administer drug screens.
Work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and after hours; schedule and attend appointments, visits, and transportation of children as needed.
Communicate effectively and timely with families, providers, co‑workers, and supervision; build trustful relationships and explain parental rights.
Convene and identify members for child and family team meetings, develop action steps and goals, and work collaboratively with all participants.
Work within communities by making referrals to service providers, collaborating with law enforcement officials and multidisciplinary teams, and training foster and adoptive parents.
For the past five years, no record of driving under the influence, reckless driving, license suspension for moving violations, or more than four moving violations.
