Overview
Clinical Research Data Abstractor – MCCRP, at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), Ft. Sam Houston, TX. Supports the John P. Murtha Cancer Center Research Program (MCCRP) with clinical data collection operations in cancer research projects. Provides data abstraction/entry to ensure data is timely, comprehensive, and accurate. Provides feedback on data collection processes for improvement and quality control.
Responsibilities
Under minimal supervision, collect clinical research data supporting multiple pan-cancer projects within the MCCRP, including pathology, treatment, and outcomes data.
Perform electronic medical record retrieval from DoD Electronic Health Record systems for collecting clinical data. De-identify data to strip protected health information per IRB-approved protocols.
Abstract/enter demographics, pathologic, treatment, outcome, and clinical assessment data into the research Data Tracking System (DTS) case report forms (CRFs), ensuring data is timely, comprehensive, consistent, and accurate.
Complete all data input, error report analysis and correction, resolve data-entry errors, and maintain meticulous records with appropriate correspondence to the clinical research team.
Ensure the integrity and accuracy of information entered into the data tracking system.
Identify opportunities and contribute to developing and implementing data standards and SOPs for performance improvement. Monitor potential problems affecting data collection and follow up on problem resolution with the team and manager.
Meet all deadlines.
Learn and understand diverse databases, projects, and clinical terminology.
Collaborate with internal and external research team members as a resource for bioinformatics and technical teams in developing, identifying, and implementing solutions to data management issues/concerns.
Maintain clinical quality measurement knowledge through self-development and keep current on specification changes relevant to assigned projects.
Act as an expert and resource to professional staff and provide education to other team members as needed.
Data Quality Control/Management: perform regular self-quality control on abstracted data before submission for review.
Participate in local or national cancer-related educational activities and webinars per ACS-CoC standards. Manage workflow to meet production levels and avoid backlogs.
May perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor, including required training for the role.
Qualifications
Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree required; a minimum of 3-5 years' experience required.
Required Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:
Knowledge of STORE, ICD-0/ICD-10, SEER staging, and AJCC TNM staging.
Knowledge of cancer data management principles, quality assurance, and medical audits as they relate to cancer data systems and regulations.
Knowledge of healthcare delivery trends, ethics and confidentiality of cancer data, professional communications, and professional associations in cancer data systems.
Knowledge of HIPAA, Privacy and FOIA, and agency policies regarding information release.
Knowledge of cancer biology, disease management, and treatment terminology.
Strong clinical background and experience with Electronic Medical Records.
Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, pathology, physiology, and basic statistics for workload assessment and quality control.
Familiarity with pharmaceutical names; familiarity with chemotherapy and radiation therapy regimens.
Ability to establish and maintain a research-based data collection system, data sets, coding schemes, and end-results reporting; organize and apply established data system principles.
Ability to obtain and maintain a T1 Public Trust Clearance.
Licenses and Certifications: Current Cancer Registrar certification is preferred.
Work Environment
This position will take place primarily in a hospital environment.
Compensation
The annual salary range for this position is $73,800-$95,000. Actual salary will be determined based on experience, education, etc.
