Department Overview
The Specialty MA role provides clinical support duties and is part of the medical care team. This position ensures seamless patient care and continuity of care by bridging gaps between services such as laboratory and imaging, specialty care, primary care, and social work. It also supports providers by performing clinical administrative duties and communicating plans to patients and their representatives.
Function/Duties of Position
Patient Care Management : Coordinates and manages aspects of the patient's clinical care process, including medication refills, lab and diagnostic orders, and Epic in Basket messages.
Care Coordination : Ensures patients follow through with outside referrals and testing, and requests and inputs results into the EMR.
Communication : Provides information and education to patients, family members, and referring physician offices, and acts as a communication link between healthcare teams.
Documentation/Data Management : Documents patient progress and participates in database input, and initiates processes to facilitate new protocol implementation and tracking tools.
Patient Care/Rooming : Accompanies patients, verifies identities, takes vital signs, and refers patients to medical staff for examination or treatment.
Required Qualifications
Three years of experience in a hospital or hospital-based clinic setting.
High School diploma or equivalent.
Current BLS certification at hire.
One of the following: Completion of a medical assistant training program, military medical services training, Oregon EMT license, or Oregon Practical Nurse License.
MA Certification from a nationally recognized certifying body (for those completing medical assistant training or formal military medical services training).
Preferred Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalent.
Three years of experience as a certified medical assistant in an ambulatory clinic.
Bilingual.
Computer skills, including EHR.
Experience with Epic and Care Everywhere.
Additional Details
This position works in a fast-paced environment with many interruptions and conflicting priorities.
Physical demands include pushing, pulling, stooping, and lifting up to 50 lbs, and requires communication in a respectful and non-judgemental manner.
