The Avian Care Coordinator will assist the Rehabilitation Center Director with all aspects of daily operations, including patient care, training and supervision of interns and volunteers, record keeping and facility maintenance.

Applicants should possess a strong interest in working in a team environment with the ability to multi‑task professionally and flexibly. They will work with volunteers, interns, partner organizations and the general public. A passion for songbirds and wildlife conservation is essential.

Responsibilities

Perform physical exams, triage, fluid therapy, pain management and euthanasia.

Document weights of birds in preparation for their movement within the facility.

Maintain complete, accurate and timely patient charts and ensure the charts “follow the birds.”

Determine diet and feeding intervals for each patient.

Administer medications in strict accordance with industry best practices.

Supervise Center volunteers and interns in the ER and throughout the Center, respond to questions and provide training.

Maintain and coordinate an adequate inventory of food and seed for bird diets.

Coordinate miscellaneous supplies for the smooth operation of the Center, including laundry, cleaning supplies and paper products.

Monitor levels of all medical supplies, including lactated ringers, euthanasia meds, antibiotics, eye ointments and pain medications.

Perform other duties as determined by the Rehabilitation Center Director and/or Executive Director from time to time.

Qualifications

Ability to work calmly and efficiently in busy, high‑intensity situations.

Endurance for long workdays in a physically and emotionally demanding setting while maintaining focus, accuracy, energy and physical activities required by the job.

Experience training and supervising volunteers, preferably in an animal care setting.

Interest and knowledge of local native songbirds.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Ability to apply common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.

Computer literacy and ability to learn our medical database system.

Strong organizational and time‑management skills.

Some college background in wildlife biology or related animal science (desirable).

Physical Demands
Essential components of the job include the ability to lift or move up to 50 lbs, stand on a concrete floor for up to 8 hours a day, climb stairs, kneel, crouch, stoop, crawl and reach to arm’s length. Precise dexterity is required to handle, feel and feed tiny fragile patients as small as 2‑3 grams. Staff are routinely exposed to chemicals, allergens such as dust and dander, zoonotic diseases, frightened animals, inclement weather conditions and noise.

Position Information
This is a full‑time 40‑hour per week position. Shifts are 8 hours and include weekends, holidays and evenings. Salary range: $12–$14 per hour. The position is non‑exempt and includes 10 days of PTO annually. Time off is not allowed from May 1 through August 15 except under emergency circumstances.
