Data Abstraction, Quality

At PicnicHealth, we're building the future of non-interventional clinical research, powered by AI and centered on patients. Our mission is to make it radically easier, faster, and more affordable to perform clinical trials and get better treatments to patients. We're replacing the legacy, services-heavy model with a modern, AI-first approach that unlocks insights from rich, multi-modal data—from clinical notes and imaging to lab results—at scale.  By engaging patients directly through our personal health assistant, PicnicAI, which meets them where they’re at and delights them along the way (with an industry leading NPS of 76), patients participate actively in the research they care about.

PicnicHealth is already a trusted partner to 7 of the top 10 pharmaceutical companies. Our work spans 40+ disease areas and has supported over 60 peer-reviewed publications, including an FDA submission that incorporates PicnicHealth data.

Founded in 2014, we’ve raised $100M+ from top investors like Amplify Partners, Felicis Ventures, B Capital Group, and Y Combinator. Our business running non-interventional studies more than doubled last year, and we’re growing even faster in 2025. We’re a team of doctors, patients, data nerds, engineers, and builders, reimagining how clinical research works — and we’re just getting started!

The Opportunity

As the Clinical Data Quality Lead, you will bridge the gap between complex clinical data and operational execution. You will own the integrity and validity of data across our growing non-interventional study portfolio, spanning data from EHRs, PROs, wearables, and ClinROs.

You will manage a team of Clinical Data Quality Managers working across our studies. Our team is well-versed in data abstraction and quality monitoring; we’re looking for a leader who knows how to scale that process and make high-stakes decisions in the face of ambiguity. In this role, you won't just supervise work and monitor compliance, but architect the engine that the team runs on. Crucially, you will partner with our Product teams to operationalize new data capabilities and help translate complex study needs into clear requirements for our platform.

At PicnicHealth, AI is at the core of everything we do. We're looking for individuals who are not just comfortable with, but genuinely excited by and actively experimenting with, the power and potential of AI.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead & Scale the Team: Lead, mentor, and scale a team of Clinical Data Quality Managers. You will foster a culture of high performance and decisive action, and evolve the function to support the requirements of a rapidly growing study portfolio. Define the Operational Quality Framework: Define and implement the overarching quality standards and operational processes to support our study portfolio. You will build scalable workflows across risk-based monitoring, escalation management, and critical data collection materials (e.g., CRFs, CRF guidelines, eClinRO scripts, abstractor training, etc.).
  • Operationalize Diverse Data Sources: You are excited by the complexity of integrating non-EHR data sources like wearables, PROs, and virtual ClinROs. You will build the operational scaffolding for new data sources —whether that means drafting assessment scripts, hiring subject matter experts, or defining what "high quality" looks like for a novel data type.
  • Drive Decision-Making in Ambiguity: Serve as the primary operational decision-maker for complex data quality considerations. When clinical guidelines are gray or source data is messy, you will make the calls required to keep studies moving, maintaining scientific rigor.
  • Oversee Quality Across the Portfolio: Own the execution of quality monitoring across all studies. You will direct your team to analyze trends not just to fix errors, but to identify systemic root causes and implement portfolio-wide improvements.Operationalize Product & AI Capabilities: Partner with Product to roll out new data capabilities and workflows to your team. You will also set an example for the team by actively experimenting with and refining our AI capabilities, ensuring that as our technology evolves, it remains practical and seamlessly integrated into daily operations.
  • Cultivate Cross-functional Relationships: Facilitate strong partnerships with Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Product, Commercial, Recruitment, and Project Management teams. You will ensure that clinical data feasibility and quality insights are considered early during study design to mitigate risks to study success.

What You’ll Bring:

  • 7+ years of “in the weeds” experience. Proven background in clinical/real-world data, data management, and data quality, particularly in support of observational research studies. You bring deep familiarity with data abstraction from medical records, designing CRFs/completion guidelines, and developing and implementing quality monitoring plans.
  • A bachelor’s degree in a life science, health, or clinical field. While a clinical degree (e.g., RN, NP, PA, DNP, etc.) is a value-add, it is not required - deep fluency in clinical data, real-world data, and data quality is the requirement.
  • 5+ years of people management experience, ideally in a high-growth or startup environment. You know how to lead experts who may have more specific domain expertise than you, and you can guide on strategy and operational considerations.
  • A builder mindset, with a track record of building processes where none existed. You are comfortable making decisions with incomplete information, and love bringing order to chaos.
  • Tech and data fluency. You are not afraid of new tools and new data sources. You are excited about the potential of AI in research and healthcare, and are ready to experiment with how it can change your team’s workflows and improve study execution. You are comfortable collaborating with Product Managers and Engineers. Past experience integrating and operationalizing workflows across diverse data sources (e.g., wearables, ePROs, eClinROs) is a huge plus.
  • You are comfortable managing multiple concurrent research projects across diverse therapeutic areas. You can switch contexts quickly between oncology, immunology, or neurology without losing track of quality requirements.
  • You have excellent communication skills and a demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams. You excel at communicating complex clinical and scientific concepts to non-clinicians and non-scientists to support research execution.

We expect all team members to be amazing in their roles and, ultimately, to move the PicnicHealth mission forward.

Why will PicnicHealth win in Clinical Research?

Trials are a major bottleneck in drug development, and the promising advancements in biotech cannot translate to real patient impact unless clinical research becomes faster and more efficient

The industry runs on outdated technology and manual processes. Research sites (hospitals, academic centers, doctors' offices) are overburdened and under-resourced. Contract research organizations (CROs), the organizations that traditionally run clinical trials for life sciences companies, typically throw hundreds-of-thousands of man-hours wrangling sites and cobbling together vendor software.

PicnicHealth has built technology that uniquely positions us to run faster, cheaper, and more flexible studies while removing burden from sites:

  • PicnicAI (trained on 350M+ clinician annotations over 100k+ patient records) is the only system that can effectively access and structure all participant EMR data trials need
  • Our AI health assistant (NPS of 76 in 2024) guides participants through study activities and enables most to be done at home
  • We're an integrated solution — virtual site, CRO, and software platform — with AI built in from the ground up, initially focusing on non-interventional research.
