Overview The Prior Authorization Specialist contacts insurance companies on behalf of patients to obtain prior authorizations for prescriptions, tests and procedures. Serves as a patient advocate and functions as a liaison between the patient and payor to address reimbursement questions and avoid insurance delays. Provides information to support the medical necessity of patient treatments and testing. Communicates with physicians and their team members to obtain necessary information as well as to inform them of any special requirements by particular insurance plans. Researches additional or alternative resources for non-covered services to prevent payment denials. Enters and scans information into Electronic Health Record as required.

Responsibilities

Contact insurance companies to obtain prior authorizations for prescriptions, tests, and procedures.

Serve as a patient advocate and liaison between the patient and payor to address reimbursement questions and avoid delays.

Provide information to support the medical necessity of patient treatments and testing.

Communicate with physicians and their teams to obtain necessary information and notify them of special insurance plan requirements.

Research additional or alternative resources for non-covered services to prevent payment denials.

Enter and scan information into the Electronic Health Record as required.

Position Requirements

High School education or GED; an associate degree in a healthcare-related field is highly desired.

At least one year of experience in a medical office environment, including work with medical insurance or claims.

Working knowledge of authorization requirements for insurance payors.

Excellent communication skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple projects.
