Overview The Joslin Care Coordinator (Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist) assists patients, providers and staff in a courteous and professional manner throughout the patient’s visit. Hours are Monday–Friday, 9:00–5:30, part time at 36 hr/wk.
As a health care organization, we have the responsibility to care for and protect our patients, colleagues and communities. We require that all staff be vaccinated against influenza (flu) as a condition of employment.
Responsibilities Maintains a clean and safe work area/exam room at all times
Cleans and prepares exam rooms for patient/family
Monitors activity and initiates patient care dependent on cues from system flow
Greet patients by name (HIPAA compliant); identify self and explain your role
Escort patients/families to exam rooms and designated areas throughout the clinic
Initiate patient intake process
Identify patient (verify name, DOB) and label specimens/tubes with three-check accuracy and Central Workup Four Point Check
Interview and perform medication reconciliation for new patients/families (diabetes and non-diabetes medications), ensuring accuracy of doses; update concerns or changes and alert provider as needed
Update pharmacy and primary care physician information
Record patient history and required health information (e.g., flu vaccine, last mammogram, last colonoscopy)
Obtain height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, finger-stick glucose values, and EKG as needed
Perform finger sticks and phlebotomy and collect appropriate specimens
Float to Pediatric departments when needed and perform phlebotomy on pediatric patients
Communicate with providers and team about abnormal vital signs, blood sugars, or patient symptoms
Label and download patient meters/pumps and print reports as needed
Assist with updating patient medications and pharmacy information
Enter data efficiently in the patient system and LIS
Assist patients with preparing for provider visits; provide mobile phlebotomy in other clinic areas as needed
Recognize low blood glucose and administer treatment per clinic protocol
Notify team and provider of blood sugar values outside normal range and related symptoms
Initiate 1903 calls when needed
Assist in training new personnel in the clinic
Clean and restock Central Work, units and exam rooms as needed
Assist providers and patients with scheduling of appointments when appropriate
Adhere to Joslin Diabetes Center policies and procedures
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications High School diploma
Graduate of an accredited medical assistant or phlebotomy program or equivalent training/experience
Minimum 1 year of phlebotomy/medical assistant experience preferred
CPR (American Heart Association) certification preferred
ASCP phlebotomy license or equivalent preferred
RMA or CMA certification preferred (passed through AAMA, AMT, NHA, NCCT, NEASC)
Proficient computer skills
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills to anticipate and respond to patient and staff needs
Excellent customer service
Ability to work in a fast-paced, diverse environment
Excellent communication skills
