Overview
The Clinical Educator, Athletic Training demonstrates a high level of expertise in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of complex patients. This role assists the health care team in preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and providing comfort. The educator provides direction, education, leadership, and accountability for program development, implementation, and evaluation. They foster professional development, empower staff, and manage resources to achieve desired outcomes with attention to quality, efficiency, and cost.
Essential Functions
Act as a leader for practice transitions, transferring knowledge, skills, and attitudes to promote organizational and practice excellence.
Serve as partner, consultant, and collaborator for interprofessional colleagues in developing and disseminating education on clinical practice changes, regulatory requirements, organizational priorities, safety events, policy, and procedure.
Support education and implementation of organizational priorities through programming for new and changing clinical practice and processes (e.g., Athletic Training Clinical Ladder).
Participate in departmental and organizational strategic planning, ad‑hoc projects, and education programs requested by interprofessional colleagues.
Promote ongoing professional development of athletic training and interprofessional team members.
Use educational design to address knowledge, skill, and practice gaps identified via needs assessments.
Mentor and consult to advance professional development of colleagues, students, and others.
Support transition of athletic trainers and other health‑care team members across learning and practice environments, roles, and professional stages.
Protect autonomy, dignity, confidentiality, and rights of all individuals involved in the learning process.
Analyze cost and anticipated return on investment for learning activities, programs, and projects.
Evaluate personal practice against professional standards, guidelines, laws, and regulations, collaborating with teams and stakeholders to facilitate professional practice and patient care outcomes.
Champion scientific inquiry, generate new knowledge, and integrate evidence into practice.
Participate in research, evidence‑based practice, and quality improvement activities aligned with the organization’s environment.
Hold full authority and accountability for program planning, guideline development, and setting practice standards.
Manage human, fiscal, and other resources to ensure quality programs and measurable positive outcomes.
Required Education
Master’s Degree in a specialized curriculum accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education, Healthcare, or a related field.
Preferred Education
Doctorate in Athletic Training Education, Healthcare, or a related field.
Licensure/Certification Required
Licensed in the Commonwealth of Virginia as an Athletic Trainer.
National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Board of Certification (BOC).
Current ECC certification.
Licensure/Certification Preferred
Orthopaedic Technologist Certification.
Years and Type of Required Experience
Five (5) years of athletic training experience.
Three (3) years in academia, athletic training clinical education, or preceptorship.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
Education program supervision, design, and implementation.
Strategic planning, policies, and procedures, education.
Other Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Preferred
Experience in staff education and professional development (orientation, preceptorship, in‑services, education).
Completion of an accredited Athletic Training Residency Program.
